CONSTIPATION ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

Constipation is known as Vibandh or malabaddhata in Ayurveda. The process of elimination is controlled by vata. Imbalance of  Vata in the colon makes all things dry and hinders the proper functioning. So, Ayurveda treats constipation as a problem arising due to the predominance of the vata dosha.

Ayurveda believes in healing the disease from its root rather than merely masking the disease through symptomatic relief. Therefore, Ayurveda works by balancing the vitiated dosha and eliminating the true cause of constipation. According to Ayurvedic treatment principle vata pacifying herbs should be utilized to relieve the constipation.

Senna (Cassia angustifolia)

Senna is a vata anulomaka, means it remove vata through the anal route. Senna ananthracine glycoside is hydrolyzed in the colon by bacteria into anthraquinones. These free anthraquinone alter the electrolyte transportation of the colon increasing the intraluminal fluids as well as acting as irritants on the mucosa. The result is an increase in peristalsis producing mass peristalsis stimulation in the colon which leads to defecation. Therefore, it works as stimulant laxative.

Nisoth (Operculina turpethum)

Nisoth is useful in the management of constipation as it is a vata moderator. It has laxative and carminative properties. Nisoth churna promotes bowel movements due to its Rechna (laxative) property.

Mulethi is very useful in digestive problems like acidity, stomach ulcers and constipation. It has vata and pitta pacifying properties and acts as a mild laxative and regulates bowel movements. It also has antibacterial, and anti spasmodic properties that prevents stomach pain.

Kala Namak (Black salt)

According to the studies the absorption of excess water from the food in the colon is considered to be the primary reason for constipation. However, black salt can stimulate the regular movement of bowel and reduce constipation. Black salt can reduce the spasms, flatulence, bloating and gas problem due to the anti-flatulent properties.

Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi)

Thymol is the main constituent in ajwain which soothes the secretion of gastric juices and improves digestion. It has Kaphavatahar properties & it increases pitta therefore, relieves constipation by improving digestion. Ajwain is a potent carminative, antispasmodic and helps in removal of constipation.

Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)

It will digest the undigested food residues by inducing or restoring normal peristaltic movement of the intestine by governing vata. Haritaki is a natural laxative and contains dietary fibres, which fights constipation. It also prevents the formation of gas or helps in expulsion of formed gas by combating flatulence.

Dhania (Coriandrum sativum)

Coriander powder is rich in dietary fibres. The greater part of this fiber is metabolically insoluble and inert. Therefore, dhania powder helps to relieve constipation and ensure the regular bowel movement. According to Ayurveda, Dhania has tridoshar effect i.e. it balances tridosha.

Saunf (Foeniculum vulgare)

Fennel acts as a good laxative. It helps in curing constipation, abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other diseases related to the intestine as it has vatahar and kaphahar action. The fibres present in fennel helps regulate the bowel movement as it induces intestinal activity by maintaining peristaltic movements. The carminative property of aspartic acid which is present in fennel makes it a good anti flatulent. Therefore, saunf is also effective in eliminating gas from the stomach.

Castor Oil (Ricinus communis)

It is known as a stimulant purgative. It contains fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, which stimulates secretory processes, decreases glucose absorption, and promotes intestinal motility, primarily in the small intestine. It also helps in softening of stool and reduces strain that often accompanies constipation. Additionally, castor oil lubricates bowels without absorbing any of the moisture from the intestinal walls helps in easy passage of stool.

Svarjiksara (Sodium bicarbonate)

Svarjiksara, also known as baking soda has alkaline composition that helps to neutralize acidity. When a small amount of Svarjiksara is mixed with water and salt, it act as a laxative and helps in clearing the bowel.
