SLEEPLESSNESS/INSOMNIA

Sleeplessness or Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder in which an individual find it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both.

Causes of insomnia
The cause of insomnia depends on the type of sleeplessness a person experience. Usually insomnia occurs due to stress, habits that disrupt sleep, mental disorders, medication or some medical conditions, use of alcohol and other addictive substances etc.

Types of Insomnia:-

There are two types of insomnia: Primary insomnia and Secondary insomnia.

  1. Primary insomnia: It means that a person is having sleep problems that has no other co-existing disease.
  2. Secondary insomnia: When a person is having sleep problems because of some other problems.

 

Insomnia also varies in how long it lasts and how often it occurs:

Transient Insomnia – Lasting from a night to a week and is usually caused by events which alters normal sleep pattern, such as traveling or sleeping in an unusual environment.

Acute insomnia – Acute insomnia lasts for less than three months. It is also called Short-term insomnia.

Chronic insomnia   Lasts for at least three months or longer and is usually secondary to another problem or a combination of problems.

Symptoms of Insomnia

People who experience insomnia usually report at least one of these symptoms:

  • Waking too early in the morning
  • Trouble falling asleep
  • Waking up during the night
  • Not feeling well-rested after a night’s sleep
  • Daytime tiredness or sleepiness
  • Irritability, depression or anxiety
  • Difficulty in paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering
  • Increased errors or accidents
  • Ongoing worries about sleep

 

INSOMNIA ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA

According to Ayurveda, Aahara (food), Nidra (Sleep) and Bramhacharya (Abstinence) are described to be the Trayopasthambas (Three supportive pillars). Proper sleep plays an important role in maintaining health, proficiency and emotional well-being. Hence forth, Sleep is one of the essential factors to lead a healthy life.

In Ayurveda, Insomnia is known as Anidra or Nindranasha. According to Ayurveda, the vitiation of the tridosha either taken all together or individually may result in to insomnia.

Kapha nourishes the brain cells and facilitates a good night’s sleep. Imbalance of this dosha causes poor nourishment of brain cells, leading to Insomnia.

Pitta is located in the heart. It controls emotions, desires, decisiveness, and spirituality. Its imbalance makes a person demanding and workaholic, thereby leading to situations that may cause lack of sleep.

Vata is linked to worry, anxiety, and problems like depression and causes insomnia.

In each patients, different combinations of dosha can lead to the disease. The Ayurvedic treatment of Insomnia focuses on balancing the aggravated body energies through herbal medicines. In Ayurveda treatment of insomnia has two goals. One is to help with quality and quantity of sleep. Second is to address the underlying cause and prevent long term health impacts due to it. Mano vritti, a relaxed state of mind is also very much important for a sound sleep to get ensued. Medhya rasayan drugs are the specific types of drugs that are effective in treating insomnia, restlessness, and anxiety etc  

Each tablet contains:

Aqueous extract derived from: Mandukparni 650mg, Kushmand 350 mg, Ashwagandha 350mg,  Amla 200mg, Sarpagandha 200mg, Ustakhadus 200mg

Powders of: Jatamamsi 75mg, Ustakhadus 50mg, Sugandhbala 50mg

Mandukparni (Centella asiatica)

In ayurveda it is described under the Medhya rasayana drugs. It has adaptogen, CNS relaxant and sedative action. It reduces tension, stress, anxiety and sleeplessness due to its sedative, tranquilizing and relaxant activity.

 Kushmand (Benincasa hispida)

Kushmanda is one of the Medhya Rasayana. In some studies,extract of Benincasa hispida fruit has been demonstrated to possess nootropic, antidepressant and anxiolytic like effect, which suggests that Benincasa hispida influences various neurotransmitter systems including serotonergic system.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

It is considered as nervine tonic which is helpful in problems like anxiety, depression and insomnia etc. Research conducted at the Department of Pharmacology; University of Texas Health Science Center indicated that extracts of Ashwagandha produce GABA-like activity, owing to its anxiolytic effect.

In another study, the antistress activity of W. somnifera on cold swimming stress was evaluated and the results indicate a significant increase in the plasma corticosterone level, phagocytic index and avidity index in rats subjected to cold swimming stress. In the rats pretreated with the drug, these parameters were near control values and an increase in the total swimming time was observed W. somnifera is a potent antistressor agent in the crude form.Journal of Ethnopharmacology 64 (1999) 91–93

 Amla (Emblica officinalis)

In Ayurveda, amla is well known rasayana drug and it is also known to cure insomnia. Extract of fruits of Emblica officinalis was investigated on acute anoxia stress tolerance test in Swiss mice. The results indicate that extract of Emblica officinalis has significant Adaptogenic activity against variety of biochemical and physiological perturbations.Int.  Sarpgandha (Rauwolfia serpentine)

Sarpagandha has Nidrajanaka Karma. Research works done on Sarpagandha shows that it is hypnotic, sedative, hypotensive, and CNS depressant in action.

A Study was conducted on 30 patients of Nidranasha (primary Insomnia). Sarpagandha tablets were prepared by giving Bhavana of Sarpagandha Moola Kashaya (root decoction) and were given to patients for the duration of one month. Highly significant improvements were observed in chief complaints like sleep initiation, maintaining sleep, early morning awakening. Ustakhadus (Lavandula stoechas)

Ustakhadus helps to diminish Kapha and Vata dosha. Results of several studies support its efficacy as a relaxant. Researchers tested the sedative properties of lavender essential oil and its main constituents, linalool and linalyl acetate.Lavandulastoechas L.A Guide to Medicinal Plants in North Africa, p- 171-173.

 Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi)

Jatamansi has tridosha balancing properties and exerts calming effect and improves quality of sleep and reduces sleeplessness. Studies suggest that this herb acts as a powerful antidote for sleeplessness and helps enhance the quality of sleep. In a study, the effectiveness of sedative and anxiolytic effect of N. jatamansi in compraison with diazepam. Obtained results indicated that extract of N. jatamansi gives sedative and anxiolytic effects.J. Med. Plants 2010, 4(36): 169-174

Another study was undertaken to evaluate the antidepressant activity of methanolic extract of Nardostachys jatamansi. The efficacy of the extract was compared with the standard drug imipramine on normal and sleep deprived mice. Finding suggests that extract of Jatamansi has dose dependent antidepressant activity and can also be used in patients suffering from depression due to sleep disturbances.  Sugandhbala (Valeriana wallichii) and Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi)

A clinical study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Tagara/Sugandhbala) and Jatamansi in the management of Anidra. A total of 34 patients suffering from primary insomnia were randomly selected from Out Patient Department and In Patient Department of Manasa Roga. In this clinical study, both the groups showed good results, but Tagara group showed better results in comparison to Jatamansi group.Ayu. 2015 Jan-Mar; 36(1): 46–49.

Jatamansi (Tagar) is reported to be effective in treating various sleeping disorders in human. Clinical trials on V. jatamansi have confirmed that root extract reduces sleep latency and improves sleep quality and therefore, considered useful in treating anxiety and insomnia. Many more studies have shown proven sedative effect of Tagar. Phytotherapy Research. 2019;1–22.

Sleeplessness or Insomnia is a sleep disorder in which a person has trouble falling and/or staying asleep. According to Ayurveda, insomnia or Anidra occur due to imbalance of tridosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). Imbalanced tridosha are the main causative factors of Anidra.

Insormac-H tablet is the herbal formulation which is effective in treating various sleeping disorders.
